History

built c1868 phillip decker soap

indiana soap works founded 1871 adolph melzer & co bought factory from phillip decker 1875 sr died. enlarged fourfold indiana soap works melzer and co soap factory, formerly sw corner of 3rd and illinois (moved?) 3rd and oregon [1880] manufacturers staple soap and lard oil main building 3 story brick 1888-56 a melzer & co* blocks 3rd ave, oregon (fountain), 4th, Maryland some buildings on next block up oregon (missouri) italianate/industrial vernacular maryland 3rd heinlein and oregon adolph melzer and company closed 1920 sold to chicago firm

plant acquired by pretty soap co c1921 henry mannheimer and adolp decker

atlas laundry and cleaning 1940

chemical specialties corp 1962

1962 remodeled for budlock refrigeration filter plant

c1976 fountain manufacturing co 1981 fountain factory bldg

moved 1989 to the former shane manf plant on Maryland St vacant and fire damage

Fire overnight 10/24/2014 damages building total loss

around 1910 melzer also a humanitarian established the "friendly inn" in the plants old stables for poor (mistreated) article horses 2/27/10 or 3/6/10
