History

Comments

In 1872 entrepreneur David J. Mackey purchased the Shanklin residence. He had the frame house torn down and erected the luxurious St George Hotel. The 5-story hotel opened with a Mardi Gras ball on Feb 19, 1874 (Feb 2?)

As hotel aged, it became dated. It was razed to make way for the new McCurdy Hotel. Mayor Bosse spoke at the farewell ceremony in January 1915. EVPL ebook Evansville - Special Industrial Edition of the Courier - August 1899
