dougite says building was an old hospital built c1840 (1902 - 60/70) probably oldest schoolhouse in county not listed prior to 1871 (didnt exist? or outside of city?) independence school 1870-1876 a white school conducted in building independence colored school commonly referred to as wabash Ave colored school Once Centennial School opened in 1876, the school became colored school one on wabash between virginia and iowa 1880 plat map nw corner of iowa and wabash closed and sold to frank lohoff 1902, razed 1903 at new location by 1903
